Chi Kung (pronounced chee gung) or Qigong is an ancient form of movement exercise, originating in China 4,000 years ago. Translated, this is ‘energy cultivation work’, with the exercises designed to encourage the flow of vital energy ‘chi’ around the body, promoting a natural self healing process and inspiring true balance with harmonious health.
Chi Kung is a branch of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) and can be used prescriptively. It is found at the root of Tai Chi and other martial arts like Kung Fu, also being associated with Taoist and Buddhist philosophies. Chi Kung gives a centering awareness helping the individual to find their own true resource of power for other creative and healing activities, by becoming more aware of their presence in the present moment.
Chi Kung comprises easy to follow repeated movements designed to mobilize the joints, lengthen and release tight
muscles and stimulate the nervous system. Also included are breathing exercises, static postures, balance and walking methods, tapping and shaking, meditation and visualization.
Chi Kung exercises and meditations encourage a calm body and a clear mind, with one of the immediate benefits being stress relief. Regular practice has a cumulative effect, helping to clear physical blockages and stagnant thought patterns, increase energy, heighten immunity and promote longevity.
Conditions which respond well to Chi Kung are:
Arthritis, asthma and breathing disorders, back pain, balance issues, cancers, chronic fatigue, circulatory disorders, cysts, depression, digestive ailments, headaches and migraine, high and low blood pressure, hormonal imbalances, kidney disorders, infertility, insomnia, M.E. neuralgia and peripheral neuropathy, osteoporosis, Parkinsons, rheumatism, sciatica, shoulder problems, sinusitus, stress-related disorders, strokes and more!
